Richard studied documentary filmmaking at Yale University. Upon graduating, he received the Howard Lamar Prize, Yale's top film award, and the Smith Arts Prize for his contributions to the undergraduate arts. Richard was also the Director of Programming of the Environmental Film Festival at Yale, and was selected for the prestigious IFP Marcie Bloom Fellowship in Film.
